Farm Pantry...

Friday evening greetings my dears.. 

Welcome to the Blessed Hearth tonight.. 

We had a beautiful but very cold day and tonight is very cold, indeed.. Oh well, it is Winter, eh?  

This is just a little farm post again.. 

I find you girls like these perhaps the best so here we go again.. smile.. 

We went up there on Wednesday for the day.. 

Terry and Trevor had been up the day before smowmobiling so the house was not too cold and only took an hour or so to be really warm .. 

The first thing I did was to make up a batch of no knead bread.. 

As you can see I am using my new pantry counter.. 

This is the view out of the pantry window.. 

Pretty snowy looking, eh? 

Then I put some chicken in a cast iron pot to prepare for dinner.. 

I decided to once again use the old back porch stove.. 

It is not a cook stove just an old air-tight one but I can put 3 pots plus the old kettle on it at once.. 

My friend Becky wanted to see it but this was all I had on my camera.. smile.. 

I found an old old hand written cookbook that I used when we lived in Sussex 30 years ago and decided that I would like to make a few favourites that I had kind of forgotten about.. 

This one is Braised Chicken and I think it came from a USA Country Living magazine, I think.. 

All you do is to brown chicken in butter or oil until browned on all sides.. Then add 1 cup of sliced celery and cook for a few minutes.. 

Add 4 cups of water and let it simmer away for 20 minutes .. 

Then just add 4 peeled and chopped potatoes and a bag of frozen green beans or one of your bottles of canned beans.. 

Add salt and pepper and simmer away until potatoes are tender.. 

Add seasoning to taste with your favourite herb...

Summer Savory is nice.. 

Then while that was simmering away and the bread was rising I started making the curtains for the pantry..  

Remember when we went to P. E. I. for a 70 mile yard sale.. 

I had bought this fabric  along with a whole garbage bag full for $3.00... 

This is my little sewing kit that I keep at the farm.. 

It is an old tin full of sewing supplies that I bought at an auction.. 

All these thimbles were in it... smile.. 

Then the meal was ready so I pushed everything to the end of the table and set it for the two of us.. 

That old oven cooks bread so much better then my new one here at home for some reason.. grin.. 

Here are the curtains all finished.. 

I ended up making a little valance to match.. I had put up a little red cow one as you recall but I din't like it with the plaid... 

I will put it over the sink in the kitchen, I think.. 

The black piece there is an old set of dresser drawers that I will keep table cloths, tea towels, place mats and such in.. 

We are getting the pantry done bit by bit.. 

I have to arrange the shelves and hang more stuff and get the other wall cupboards and such up... 

Terry put the heat pipe through to the living room so now the next thing is to get the sink all in... 

I hope to get to the cottage in St. Martins because I have an old cupboard or two there that I want to use... 

All in due time...

We have had to postpone the last 2 weeks due to storms but I hope we get it done tomorrow.. smile..

A January Farm Day...

Hello there everyone.. 

Welcome to the Blessed Hearth .. 

So glad you dropped by.. 

Well, we are having some changing weather here in Eastern Canada.. 

Terry and Dustin (our youngest son) spent a couple of days last week working at our old farm up in the Kent Hills.. 

Those of you who have been following the blog for awhile know we have this old place that we both love and visit whenever we can.. Mostly during the Spring and Fall but when we have a good Winter like we are having so far this year we get to even go on Winter days.. 

Terry always goes even when the lane is plugged with snow.. He just snowshoes in..

He loves it.. He makes a fire and heats up a can of beans on top of the stove and just enjoy his own company... smile.. 

He putters around doing this and that but last week Dustin went up with him for two days to do some work.. 

Dustin loves it there, too so I think they enjoyed themselves.. 

I sent lunch both days and Terry sent the leftovers home with him.. smile... 

They finished the pantry floor and got all the walls finished in the back porch.. 

I was excited to go see what was accomplished so we headed out there on Saturday.. 

It was a beautiful day as you can see.. 

The old place looked sweet on this January day...

They had fires on so the house was quite warm and it did not take long to heat it up.. 

I loved the floor and was excited to stack stuff on the shelves... 

Then we had dinner.. 

Place mats sent to us from our dear friends the Mayo family from Wisconsin.. 

Aren't they lovely ? 

Just a bit of simple farm fare.. 

Terry's kind of meal.. 

Steak, mashed, squash, carrot and parsnip mix... 

A little Israeli Salad on the side...  

Then later after all was cleaned up... 

A bit of Magic Fruitcake made with my own Mincemeat and a lovely cup of tea.. 

A couple of pantry shelves.. 

Slow but sure it is all coming together.. 

I will share more pics as we get things finished.. 

We need to hook up an old porcelain sink and a cubby... 

This is an old cupboard that was given to us last week from a sweet friend..  

It is full of little cubby spaces.. 

I left it just as it was except cleaning it ... 

I found the little red cow curtain at the Thrift store this week and we got it hung.. 

I was going to make it but this was only $2.00... 

All in all it was a lovely day.. 

Dustin was in and blew out the snow as a surprise for his Dad.. smile.. 

He was pretty happy about that.. 

We went up again today and there is not hardly any snow ... 

We have had rain and mild temps the last couple of days so the snow has left for awhile anyway... 

I guess this is it for today, my friends..

Florida and such just does not call our names.. grin..

Farm Day and such..

Good Evening everyone.. 

I expect you wonder where on earth I have been.. smile.. 

Well, I must be honest and tell you.. 

Running the roads ... 

Do you ever have weeks like that? 

My Mom used to say that if you run on Monday then you run all week and I am beginning to believe it.

I will begin by showing you some pics of the old farm.. 

We haven't been up together yet this Spring until this trip.. 

Terry has gone up and made a fire and sometimes I sat in the truck and read as it was quite damp in the house.. 

We couldn't get in the driveway even until a couple of weeks ago.. 

As you can see there is still snow up high on the Kent hills.. 

The house warmed up quickly, though. 

I cleaned and made lunch.. 

Kind of fun doing this.. 

Everyone has their priorities, eh? 

Terry and I were talking about that on the way up .. 

Some like to go on trips or buy new all terrain vehicles or whatever.. 

We like going to an old farm and working.. grin.. 

Anyway.. 

Lunch was Tuna Pasta Salad.. 

I just cook as much pasta as needed. 

Cool off with cold water and drain well.. 

Mix in a large bowl a can of drained tuna, chopped white onion, celery, cucumber, green pepper and mushrooms to suit your taste.. 

Then mix up a bit of mayo with some Caesar salad dressing and fresh lemon juice.. 

Add pasta.. 

Stir together with some sea salt, freshly ground pepper and chopped parsley.. 

Serve over fresh lettuce leaves.. 

I added just a few little pics around the old farm house.. 

We also spent a day with our lovely daughter.. 

David (our fave son-in-law) had a birthday and we all went to Church Street Steak House for dinner.. 

Our grandsons were there, too but they do not like their pics on here very often.. 

The food was wonderful.. 

Shonda and Dave gave me a couple of nice surprises.. 

A dear little copper bird with a fern in it and Dave gave me a lovely leather journal and pen.. 

(That's why he is our favorite.. grin)

To be honest he is our only son-in-law but like I tell him I am sure he would be our fave, anyway.. smile.. 

Isn't that the sweetest planter?  

It will match my hanging copper pots.. 

Well, sweet ladies I am zonked tonight so I will sign off..

I plan on working on the tea towel things tomorrow and finishing them up.. 

Hopefully, I can post about that tomorrow night..
