A Sunday in March

Good Evening everyone.. 

And what a lovely one it is here in New Brunswick.. 

It is the kind of day that lets you know winter may still be here but Spring is just around the corner.. 

The sun shone all day but there was a bit of a bite in the air with the wind.. 

That is all right though as we know that the worst is over, eh! 

A few days ago we had some rain and the wind was blowing... 

If you have been following the blog for awhile you know that I am a stormy weather type of person.. 

Especially the wind! 

Anyway... 

The rain was hitting the windows and I could hear the wind whirling around the fireplace chimney.. 

The furnace was on and it was all so cozy.. 

I turned on some lamps and lit my fave incense stick.. 

Sandalwood.. 

And put in an old CD that is so lovely.. 

I love Gospel music but I like other kinds, too.. 

Several years ago when I had my wee shop in St. Martins I used to be on the lookout for shop music, perse...

Well, I was in a store in Bangor when I heard this beautiful old style music playing ...  

It reminded me of when I was a kid.. 

I ran up to the clerk and asked where the music was from.. 

She said it was a store CD and they sold it there.. 

Needless to say, I bought one and occasionally played it in the shop or here at home.. 

I still do.. 

Anyway...

The music was playing, the incense was burning and I needed to put a kettle of soup on to simmer.. 

I had some homemade chicken broth, a can of tomatoes, carrots, celery, peppers, onions and a couple of handfuls of wild rice and mixed grains .... 

All I needed was some herbs.. 

Last Fall when I was cleaning up the herb bed I gathered little bundles of mixed herbs and tied them with kitchen twine and put them in individual little freezer bags.. 

They are lovely for a pot of soup.. 

I must remember to do it again this Fall, Lord willing.. 

Parsley, sage, thyme, rosemary and perhaps summer savory.. 

Oh yes and some garlic.. 

Don't forget the garlic.. smile.. 

So with that all going on I pulled out my sewing machine..

Just pottering about, you know.. 

I had bought this pretty tea towel at the dollar store and decided to turn it into a dish rug or whatever you call them.. 

I love them beside the sink.. 

It is thick and gathers the moisture from wet dishes or washed veggies.. 

It can hold a hot pot that has been drained and so on.. 

I did get it finished but forgot to take a pic.. (as usual)  

Sometimes I wonder why you girls read this stuff but you do.. 

So... 

Onward I go.. grin.. 

I have been buying some plants here and there... 

I may of mentioned this last time but here are a few more.. 

Moses in the Bulrushes, Ivy and a Cast Iron plant.. 

Oh and Purple Passion.. 

I love this plant and have not had one since the 70s..   

Shonda thought that was funny for some reason..  grin.. 

For some reason I think plants and books enhance a home..

Here is a new recipe that I tried out on dear Terry... 

Baked stuffed potatoes.. 

Only the stuffing is potatoes mixed with cooked flaked white fish and a bit of cheese on top.. 

Of course, I loved it and he liked it... smile.. 

I will keep trying.. 

Perhaps with something from this book.. 

She is lovely..

Her recipes are lovely, too..

I ordered this one from Thrift Books.com.. 

It is a very interesting book.. 

It is just coincidence that I have so many Australian ones though..

I love love books... Do you? 

I read all year through.. Not just the Winter..

Well dear hearts I am almost finished.. 

Our youngest son just called and said it is ten degrees out in Alberta... 

I am missing him quite a bit these days... 

Bless his heart... 

Anyway.... 

We took a wee drive up to the farm this afternoon.. 

Still a bit of snow up there but the brooks are open... 

We will soon be able to go up and spend some time... 

Have to get ready for the summer.. 

I expect to be there this year although it was lovely being home last summer ... 

Time flies and it will soon be June.... 

This is a little needle felting project I am trying to do... 

I don't know if it actually looks like lavender or not.. grin.. 

I am going to try another one till I get it to suit me then I want to make some lavender sachets... 

So I guess I am finished for today..

Another beautiful Sabbath is almost over..

We were so blessed this morning in service.. 

God's Presence was so real.. 

So happy to have a daily relationship with Him.. 

He surely enhances our lives.. 

And gives us a hope of an eternal life with Him... 

An old song we sing sometimes says it all.. 

Just to walk with Him means everything to me.. 

Just to know He cares and His hand is leading me.

A Stormy Day here in New Brunswick...

Good Evening lovely people... 

Welcome to the Blessed Hearth.. 

So happy you dropped by.. 

We are in the midst of a storm here in New Brunswick.. 

The wind is blowing rather hard and snow is coming down.. 

It is to turn to rain later on tonight.. 

Typical March weather for Eastern Canada ... 

All is cozy and snug here on the home front, though.. 

Charlie likes to inspect it all and see how it's going out there.. 

Checks it all out and then wants back in.. 

Wondering on what is keeping me... grin.. 

I was in the pantry making some cookies.. 

We haven't had any around here since Christmas, I think.. 

I am saying that the weather made me do it.. grin.. 

In between house chores I was checking out some books I bought at the thrift stores this week.. 

Love the new cook book.. 

Miss Dahl's... 

She had a show on for awhile and I loved her vintage dishes and cooking style..  

I made her Spinach Barley Soup.. 

Oh my.. 

It was delicious!! 

Spinach barley soup

Recipe by Sophie Dahl from Miss Dahl's Voluptuous Delights

 

Serves 4-6

-3 tablespoons of olive oil

-1 onion, chopped

-2 large fresh sage leaves, chopped

-6 1/2 cups of vegetable stock

-6 cups of spinach, washed and chopped

-3/4 cup of pearl barley

-Salt and pepper

-1/2 cup of grated Parmesan

 

Heat the oil in a heavy-bottomed pan, put in the onion and sage leaves and cook on a low heat for about 5 minutes. While that's cooking, heat the stock in another pan. Stir the spinach into the onion mixture and cook for another few minutes. Pour in the hot stock and cook, covered, on a low heat for 10 minutes. Add the barley and leave it cooking for another half an hour or until the barley is soft. Season to taste. When it is ready, ladle into bowls and sprinkle the Parmesan on top.

I used chicken stock and did not add sage as I am not a sage lover... I used parsley and stirred the parm in the soup.. 

We had a lovely Caesar Salad in my new salad bowl for lunch..  

This afternoon I did up a tea towel that I picked up, too.. 

Hoping to do up a bunch of these... 

Terry worked outside blowing snow for awhile... 

I had bought myself a new wind chime from Amazon.. 

The one Dustin gave me has been beaten around a lot so I brought it in and ordered another one.. 

Terry put it outside our window last night and let us just say that we woke up quite often.. 

The wind was fierce..  

He said in the night.... 

" Something has got to change with that wind chime, Faye!"

grin.. 

So today he went out and put it around the corner.. 

Tonight we will see how that works.. grin.. 

Then he decided to have a break.. 

The paper and a race he had taped makes for a stormy afternoon.. 

And a few zzz's.. grin.. 

Charlie kept himself entertained at times.. 

I don't know what he thinks he sees out there.. 

He has to look under the dining room table and a tea trolley to see anything.. 

He give a few huffs every now and then.. 

One thing for sure is that he leaves a mess on the windows... 

Sometimes deer come and try to get some old apples that had fallen and so I think he is looking for them.. smile.. 

For supper I cooked a pork chop and a half.. 

I am not a meat eater and Charlie even gets half of my half.. grin. 

We also had baked potatoes.. 

Love love my potato baker.. 

Found it at a thrift store many years ago.. 

The potatoes taste just like oven baked but just a plug in instead of turning the big oven on.. 

A bit of coleslaw and pickles and that was supper.. 

Evening is here again... 

Time to light a bit of incense and make a cup of tea.. 

I am enjoying the sweet scent of these incense sticks I found at Chapters on half price.. They even came with it's own holder.. 

What a lovely smell.. 

I am thanking the Lord for the little cheque that finds it's way into my account now every month.. 

I am not a spender perse but sure enjoy these little finds.. smile..

Cindy is a sister in the Lord which makes her even more special but I love her decorating style.. 

Although, my decor is not the same as hers I still love seeing what she has been doing in her lovely home..

I was visiting with a sweet girl this Summer.. 

She and her husband grew up with our kids but when he joined the RCMP they were stationed in Manitoba ...

They were home on vacation and I asked her if she had met Cindy out there..  

She said she had met her at a Ladies Retreat and that she is a sweet person and I had to laugh when she said with so much excitement.. 

"And she sews!!"

She certainly is a talented lady and comes up with wonderful outfits.. 

She made this beautiful dress for her little sister..

Ending up roses...

Hello everyone.. 

Just wanted to check in for a few minutes.. 

We have been expecting a storm here in New Brunswick but have not seen it as yet.. 

Hopefully, it has taken a different route and forgot all about us.. smile.. 

The last couple of days have been so warm.. 

We hardly need a jacket in the afternoons.. 

We made out little trip to town and found a few books at the library.. I am getting new glasses in a couple of weeks and all went well with the test.. Glad to have that done, though.. 

I love my contacts but need to wear glasses sometimes.. 

Found a few books at the library, too.. 

We were invited out for dinner and it was delicious.. 

So nice to meet with old friends every once in awhile.. 

I have been making some things for our Keepers meeting.. 

I will hopefully get it all together tomorrow.. 

We had fish chowder and basil toasts for supper tonight.. 

Not too exciting.. 

I found a new cookbook at the library and it is quite modern.. 

I mentioned to Terry that next week I want to try a new recipe every night for a week.. 

Oh dear Lord.... 

That was all he said.. 

hm mm..

 Wonder what that means.. 

He can't wait, I guess.. grin.. 

I have been trying out something with the stamps and pads but it is not working.. sigh.. 

I have had a few miscalculations lately.. 

You don't know till you try, though.. Right?  

Well, I must go ... 

I do have a little success story recipe for you, though.. 

Sometimes .. come night time my feet bother me so I thought I would make a little recipe to rub on them.. 

It is lovely.. 

Rose Foot Oil.. 

4 tsp. almond oil.. 

4 drops of rose essential oil

1 drop of lavender essential oil.. 

Just warm this oil up a few seconds in your microwave and add your essential oils.. 

Then smooth all over your nice clean feet.. 

Rub in well and then put on a nice cozy pair of socks and wear through the evening.. 

Even to bed if you can keep them on.. 

I can't wear socks to bed anymore.. 

It is an old girl thing, I guess. grin..
