Your Daily Biscuit...

Hello there everyone..
Happy Weekend to you all.

Last Saturday I visited a ladies group that our daughter, Shonda does in the St. John church..
We had a lovely time and I did a wee cooking lesson on making this Daily Biscuit recipe..

I came across a version of it on the web and thought it was lovely..
I shared with the ladies that I had a bag of hamburger buns in my cupboard for a month or so.. They had fallen behind the lazy -susan and I had not noticed.. Anyway, when I did find them, they still had not gone bad.. Can you imagine?  What must they put in them things to keep that long?
As you know I have been pushing easy peasy no knead bread practically since I started the blog.. Just because homemade bread is so much better not only for us but for our growing children..
You know exactly what is going into it..
No knead bread is a 5 minute stir and then let it raise and bake..
The recipes are HERE  and HERE
If you search my blog there are many variations to no knead..
Terry's fave is Cinnamon Raisin No Knead Bread that I posted on Valentines..

Anyway..
Well, this biscuit takes a maximum half hour of your time.. Ten minutes to mix up and 18 minutes to bake...
There are just so many variations of it that you will not get sick of them.. smile

I will include some ideas for you but for now here is the recipe..

Daily Biscuit Recipe..
3 cups of flour
2 T. sugar *
1 t. seasalt
1 T. baking powder
Whisk with your whisk ..

Measure out 1 cup of milk and add 1 T. lemon juice..
Set aside..

Add 1/4 cup of chopped cold butter to the dry ingredients and use your hands or pastry blender to turn to a crumble..
Then add 1/2 cup of unsweetened applesauce..*
Blend in with the butter..

*Add 1/2 cup of raisins (opt.) You can just make them plain..
Add your milk and with a fork and turn just until mixture holds together..
Turn onto a floured parchment sheet or silpat..
Knead a few times until it holds together. Shape into a rectangle about 1 inch thick.. You can use your rolling pin if you like..
Using a knife cut into 12 equal parts..
Brush with milk and a sprinkle of raw or granulated sugar or cinnamon sugar..
Put your silpat or parchment on a cookie sheet..

Bake in 450 degrees F. oven for 17-20 minutes or golden brown..

Variations...
* Add 1/2 cup of raisins, dried cranberries, chocolate chips, dried blueberries or grated cheese..

You can also use 1/2 cup of mashed bananas in place of applesauce and 1/2 cup of chocolate chips..
Replace the sugar for coconut sugar or perhaps honey although I have not tried this..
or
Savoury version.. .
Add 1/2 cup of grated cheese of choice and/or a couple of tablespoons of chopped herbs such as chives..
Sprinkle a bit of cheese or herbs on top in place of sugar..

Add 1 tsp. of black pepper and stir in.. Sprinkle some lightly on top..
Wonderful served with soup, chili or salad..

We really enjoyed being with the ladies and was blessed with Shonda's devotional on Building your Faith..
Hope to visit again soon..

This is all for tonight my dears...
Hope you find this helpful..
Let me know how you make out with them...

Looking forward to hearing from you..
God bless..

  8. I've wondered the same thing about the bread that can be bought nowadays, it does seem to "last forever" and that is scary. Much better to make your own! I love making sourdough bread and biscuits, and that has become our family's favorite. I've even made sourdough cornbread and it is delicious too. Glad you had such a special time sharing your biscuits with your daughter's church ladies. Blessings and hugs to you :)
