Spring Time Chores..

Good Evening everyone..

Spring is here in New Brunswick or kind of..
Although it is still quite cool and we had a heavy frost last night..
Had to bring in our hanging pots and tomato plants and then put them out again to be rained on today..
Nevertheless it is Spring and everything is turning green and beautiful..

Terry and I went for a drive and took a pic of that beautiful scene above..
He used to work there in those fields when he was a teenager and whenever I would get a chance to have the car I would drive by hoping I would see him.. grin..
Actually, we were looking for violets as I want to make my salves again...

In the meantime I am in the process of making some Dandelion Lotion Bars..

This is a pin I found on Pinterest and they seem to be an easy thing to make..
You can find the pin Here..
It is pinned on my Homemade Toiletries Board Here..
I will let you know how I make out..

And Terry has put in an order for Dandelion Jelly..

That I made HERE..
It tastes just like honey and is very good for you..

We were back out to the farm for a day again..
We are trying to get as many days as possible there before we move to the cottage for the Summer..

So pretty up there with the choke cherry trees all in blossom and the grass turning green..
Don't you love Spring..
I guess here in Canada our warm weather is so scarce that we Canadians kind of obsess about it all.. sorry... smile..

Terry picked some rhubarb and I made jam..

So love cooking in Aunt Eva's old kitchen.. smile..

I think this is our favorite after strawberry...
Do you like rhubarb jams?
This is a Rhubarb and Pineapple one..

Here is my recipe..

Rhubarb Pineapple Jam..
6 cups of chopped rhubarb
5 cups of white sugar
Bring to a boil and then turn down heat and simmer until tender..
(about 25 minutes)
Then add a 19 ounce can of crushed pineapple...
2 small packages of strawberry jello..
Stir well and heat for a few more minutes..
Pour into sterilized jars and seal..
You can keep this in your fridge but I find if it seals it keeps in our cold room for a year at least...
Sometimes I add 2 cups of fresh crushed strawberries ...
 Enjoy...

Came across this and thought it was so neat..

I use Plaintain in several of my homemade salves.
The website address is there at the bottom if you are interested.. ok?

Preparing for our Keepers of the Home meeting Saturday in Salisbury..
If you are interested please email me at
houseofhenry@hotmail.com and I can give you the details.. Should be a great day..

Well, girls hope all is well and looking forward to hearing from you all ..
Let me know about your springtime projects ..
God bless..

  2. My grandfather used to make dandelion wine. Your rhubarb jam looks delicious. I usually make a sauce similar to applesauce and we eat it over ice cream and angel food cake.

  3. Hello Dearie, I picked 3 cups of rhubarb off of my two plants (only second year plants),,,need 4 cups for a pie...guess I'll have to hit the little road side stand down the road. Hope she has some rhubarb left. I hope my plants do better next year. I had a humongus one a few years ago and Jim (the dear man that he is) decided to pull it out! Ug! Anyways, your rhubarb jam looks just wonderful. Oh, Faye, I wish I lived by you so I could buy so much of your salves and things that you make. Wishful thinking!!

  6. I am waiting on some rhubarb. My nephew's wife doesn't like it and they have a huge patch at their new home. I am going tomorrow to pick it and dig up the plants. My dad is/was native - Potawatomi - I grew up eating plaintain and dandelion greens. I only wish I would have listened more when he telling me what greens to forage for.

  7. Hi Fay, it has been a while since a visit and as usual I am not disappointed. You always have so much to give to us. I love those little heart shaped lotions. My hands hurt so much from weeding and they are always so rough and dry. I am going to try to make some.

    1. Hi dear.. The recipe link for the dandelion jelly is up above in the post under the jelly pic.. It is quite easy to do, also.. Our Keepers of the Home meet in June and then at the end of July or first of August they all come down to St. Martins at the cottage for a sleepover.. Then back at it in September.. No, you are not nosy.. grin.. Just curious.. Thanks for dropping by.. Hope it is not too hot down there in the middle of Texas.. xo

  10. SO good to come here and find a post from you, Faye! I am going to have to give your Rhubarb Pineapple Jam a try! Our rhubarb is ready to be harvested for the first time and I would love to try the jam! It make it sound so easy! ;) I also want to check out the Dandelion Lotion Bars. One of next week's jobs for me is to make a few batches of soap. Your pictures are beautiful, as always!

  12. Dear Faye,
Another lovely post! On Saturday I planted my tomato plants in the garden and a row of green and yellow beans...thats all we have done so far...hopefully it wasnt to cold for the tomato plants...they were growing so nicely and were getting so big I had to get them out of the window. Hope all is well! Love reading your post!
    Love,

  13. loved the post, and the photos, as always! the water one is just fantastic!
I want to try the lotion bars, they sound terrific!
wondering if you just dried the dandelions and stored in a cool dark place, if you could keep many months before making the oil to extend the shelf life? or if it would dry too much and not be as effective. I would probably love this deep in winter when my hands get so dry and cracked.
lots to think about, so much fun visiting with you!
    hugs, always!
    and many many blessings :)

  17. I love everything rhubarb faye but unfortunately both our rhubarb crowns died recently. But I've just met our new to-be neighbours in the countryside and have been told that the soil is perfect and everything grows. Hopefully next year I'll be able to make rhubarb jam too.

  18. Beautiful pictures.
I love your memory of trying to catch a glimpse of Terry in your courtship days :)
I used to do similar things, to catch a glimpse of my sweetheart. He still makes my heart go pitter-patter when he walks in the door after work :) Even after all these years......

Love the recipe you've included. I've never made rhubarb jam, or pie. I need to, as my sweet-heart loves the stuff.

    Have a happy day...

  19. Faye, your first picture, the river scene and the green fields is breathtaking; almost looks like those pictures you see of Ireland...so green. Hope you will have some of your dandelion salve in the shop this summer; I'm hoping to get down. Blessings to you and yours.
