An old recipe box...

Good evening ladies..
How is your week going?
Terry has been away all week and I came down with a cold...
I had planned on doing a lot of chores but I did not accomplish hardly a thing...
Oh well, this too shall pass..

Anyway.. Terry is coming home tonight so I thought perhaps I should make something a bit special for him..
He gets tired of restaurant food when he is away...

When I went downstairs to make the fire I thought I would find an old Louis L'Amour book to read ..
I know.. I know.. But sometimes I like to read one of his books..
Very historical.. grin..

 Instead I  found this..
Terry's mother's recipe box..

She was a wonderful cook and taught me so much..
I was blessed to receive her recipe collection and all the instructions she gave me over the years..

Anyway... Terry had bought a big bag of bananas over the weekend and I thought I had better use them up..
Sometimes I just put them whole in the freezer and bake with them later..

I was sure I would find an interesting recipe in her recipe box and I did.. smile..

A chocolate banana cake..

With chocolate chips...hmm...

Looks pretty good, eh?
I thought I would wait and get his opinion before I posted the recipe for you.. I think he will like it.. smile..

And then I found this treasure...

CUCUMBER SALAD DRESSING..
1/2 cup sour cream
1/2 cup mayonnaise
2 tsp. juice from dill pickles.. (I used dill relish)
1 slice onion
1/2 of a cucumber.. peeled and seeded
I added kosher salt and freshly grated black pepper
and a pinch of red pepper flakes..
Put everything in a blender and blend well..

I put it in a mason jar and it will keep in the fridge for a week or two...
It is a delicious dressing:-)
We both are salad lovers and I make almost all of our salad dressings..
This one is a keeper..

Are any of you girls growing any sprouts?
I have lentil sprouts growing and a mix, too..
I want to make a sprouted grain bread...

Oh and I made a NO KNEAD LOAF OF BREAD,,,
Just click on for the recipe...

Terry likes it better when I make just one loaf and leave out the rosemary and salt..

We are trying not to eat much bread but he has been away all week... grin..

Oh and girls don't forget about the SWEET HEART GIVE AWAY ..
Just click on and sign up if you like..

Welcome to all the new followers.. So glad to have you..

Thank you to all you sweet ladies who signed up..
I will leave it open until Jan. 30.. OK?

As I have not been feeling too well this week I worked on the next Keepers of the Home meeting..
It will be on Feb. 4...

If there are any  ladies out there who live in our area please feel free to come and join us.
It will be at our fellowship hall in Sussex...

It will no doubt be a heart theme thing.. grin..

Take care and God bless ...
Hugs..

Everything looks wonderful. But I will stick with the yummy salad dressing.
I have given up bread and sugar until I lose 20lbs. I can do it.

  12. I'm allergic to bananas so even though it looks delicious, I must skip it. However, that cucumber dressing is a must. It sounds so scrumptious. Thanks for sharing.

  13. Hello Miss Faye, Old recipe boxes are the best! I have my mother's and in there are recipes from my two grandmas. I use them a lot. Your banana chocolate cake sounds wonderful! My sister made banana bread last week with extra bananas and chocolate chips. She was so nice to share with us. We do that quite often. It was very moist and delicious. If Terry likes your recipe, I hope you will share it with us.

I think of you often when doing my daily routine and cleaning. I love your tips.

  16. Hi Faye, thank you for stopping over my place. I'll definately be looking for Lemon Verbena plants...I wonder why we can't find the seeds? I'm new in the process of herbs, I'll learn over time. Your recipes look so good and comforting..I believe I will try your no knead bread recipe. My bread of late isn't rising up to well. It was a breadmaker machine recipe, and I know longer have the machine. Time for a change. Hope your cold passes quickly, I know it takes alot out of you. I sure wish I lived near you..I would love to attend those meetings with you. Wish there was one near me. Have a wonderful w/e.

  17. ps...I know those recipes are special. I have some that my dear MIL has given me in her own handwriting, and have one of my mothers also. They are special. I keep them in my recipe binder, in a plastic sheet protector, because I am sloppy when I cook. LOL....:) That is a very nice recipe box, chocked full of treasure. :)

  19. Hi Faye, I hope you're feeling better today. Are you getting a lot of snow there? It's been snowing all day here but I hear a bit of ice hitting the house now. Not a nice day or evening to be out so we are staying cozy in the house. I have the very same recipe box and it was my mother-in-law's too. It didn't have any recipes in it though. I have a similar style recipe box that I received as a young teen and it has recipes I wrote as a teen up to the early years of our marriage. I hope you have a good weekend. Blessings, Pamela

  20. Hi, Faye! I seemed to have taken a blogging break. :) I do hope your cold is better. A cold can make you feel so miserable. That recipe box is priceless, and the chocolate banana cake slice looks delicious! The cucumber dressing sounds delicious too. The very Wednesday that I got sick a couple of weeks ago I purchased a sprouter. I spent Wednesday evening looking up different things that I could sprout and was so excited. Well, that night I got sick and it hurts to even think about sprouts. I'm not sure if I will ever be able to try them. I am going to pass the sprouter thingy to Donna and maybe she can enjoy them.

    Have a great evening.

    :)Vicki

  21. Hey, guess what? I have that same recipe box. I bought it from an estate sale. I've never tried to grow sprouts - I'm going to add that to my "must try" list. Blessings from Wisconsin.

  22. I'll be counting down the days until Keepers! I always get inspired by being there...I've learned lots over the years (although I try to hide it when I'm there...I guess I'm a brat-LOL). I think that I will be trying that bread recipe again tomorrow- I'm kinda playing around with it because I'd rather feed my kids whole wheat (I think that if I add a bit of honey it will taste a bit better than last time I made it)... A question for you...Do you think that if you let bread raise too long then it'll come out tasting "yeasty"?

    2. Hi Brat.. I made too many mistakes and had to delete my own comment.

Yes, you can raise your bread too long and it will taste yeasty.. Or cut back on your yeast by 1/2 tsp...
      Ok?
      Love ya..

  24. Hi Faye, My mom used to have a recipe box just like that...it must have been popular here in Canada year ago. :o) Thanks for the salad dressing recipe, sounds gooood! Can't wait for the banana/chocolate cake recipe, I hope you post it soon.

I hope you're feeling better and the storm you had Friday has passed. Have a great weekend.
