A week in October

Good Evening everyone..
Thanks for dropping by the Blessed Hearth today..
Hope you are all well.
We had our first snow today.
Very messy!  Slush but it didn't last long!
  Thank heavens!

The wind has been blowing the last few days and nights..
Makes for very cozy sleeps..
The curtains billow and we snuggle under the duvet..
Just love those kind of nights..
I did put an extra thick old quilt on top of the duvet last night..
Terry warned me it was going to be be freezing so I tried to be helpful...
But the window stayed open.. grin...

This is just a short post tonight..
I have been doing but have not been very vigilant with my camera..
Sorry..

I don't know if I mentioned on here that I was pressing leaves between waxed paper to make a table runner...
I forget if it was here or on Instagram..
But here it is..

Terry and I went to Calais last week for the day..
I bought some lovely fabrics (they are so much cheaper in the States)
I have some dish cloths to make and such..
And I had them cut me a long table runner of clear table topper to put over the leaves with a crochet runner on the bottom..

My friend Dawn shared her recipe for 2 ingredient Bagels..

We loved how they turned out..
You can find the recipe on Weight Watchers site..

We had Chinese one night..
Sweet and Sour Chicken and Chinese Pasta..
My Mom worked for years in a Chinese restaurant and this is a recipe the owners used to make for their family..
They didn't serve it in the restaurant but she used to make it for them and we like it every once in awhile..

Stir fry whatever veggies you like in a bit of oil and garlic..
Some onions, peppers, celery, mushrooms, onions and carrots in this one..
Add a bit of shredded fresh ginger and 5spice...
Cook your pasta.. You can use spaghetti or even rice noodles..
Drain and add to veggies..
Add soy sauce to taste...
Easy...

Charlie seems to enjoy looking at the view..
We have deer come out often to feed on the apples...
It is deer season here once again..

I bought a new cookbook on Saturday from our community..

It is a reprint of 1972...
I loved looking through it and the recipes are lovely..
Well, except for those jellied salads..
Do you remember when they were served at every fancy dinner and not so fancy.. smile..
I just never took to them except for Tomato Aspic..
We learned to make that in Home Economics and I still like that one..

The food world has changed but one thing that hasn't is CAKE...
It is still delicious..
Have you ever felt like a piece of cake and cup of tea would make everything better?
Well, last night that is how I felt even though we have been trying not to eat sugar..
I noticed this recipe in the new cookbook and as it was so simple I thought I would give it a try..
It is lovely!
We only ate one piece each but each bite was so good!
Here is the recipe..
Very simple..

Nut Cake..
1 3/4 cup of flour
2 1/2 tsp. of baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 cup of shortening
1 cup sugar
1/2 tsp. vanilla
2 eggs
1 c. milk
1/2 cup chopped walnuts..
Mix all together and place in greased pan..
350 degrees F. for 35 minutes or more..
Till firm in the middle..
8 x 8 square or round pan..
I didn't bother to frost the cake..
It is just so moist..

Well dear girls so happy to have you..
Hope your Fall is going well ..
Looking forward to the weekend as Shonda and I are taking a little shopping trip...

Take care and God bless...

Getting fire wood on a Canadian Fall day.. .

Good Evening, dear hearts..
How are you all doing in your part of the world?

Today has been another sad day in Canada as another senseless tragedy has taken place with the shooting death of one of our own  soldiers in our capital city..

This world is getting to be a scary place even here where we are known to be lovers of peace..
We so need to pray for our government and the protectors of our  country..

Meanwhile...
Terry and I went to the woods yesterday..

He needed to chop some more fire wood for Winter ..
Actually, I believe that this is for next year as this season's is already in the basement..
I guess that is how it is done..
Chop this year for next and so on.. smile..

Anyway, I did not want him going alone so I packed up a bag of books and a lunch and away we went..

Picking up the mail yielded this book from Amazon that I ordered a couple of weeks ago..

Good timing!!

Our Canadian woods are a beautiful place to be this time of year..

And the wind was blowing so I was a happy gal..
Terry chopped wood and I read and made lists.. (That is one thing I like to do..)
Shonda wants me to share a craft table with her at a Christmas show so I had a few plans to make..
I may try it.. smile..

After a while we had a bit of lunch..

A thermos of tomato soup and a bit of homemade bread that my Mom made..

Terry had a couple of salmon sandwichs with some homemade pickles..

A glass of ginger ale hit the spot, too..
The mosses and ferns and foliage are so beautiful..
Nearby, were a few windmills...

The drive up to the Kent Hills is uphill all the way.. grin..

Midway through the afternoon the thermos of  tea came out..

What is there about having a hot cup of tea outside on a cool windy day?  It tastes so good and I am sure it is just what the doctor ordered.. smile..

During the War everyone drank tea during each crisis and it helped everyone to calm down..
I think it works.. grin..

Watching Terry (who is not a young man) cutting down wood with a running power saw in one hand and a pulp hook in another is not really my cup of tea.. The wood was huge and heavy ..

I felt like I had been drug through a knot hole backwards by the time we came off that mountain..

But several hours later it was time to head back home with a trailer and the back of the truck full of wood..
He's a good man... smile..

We did have a flat tire on the way back in the dark..

Ohhh.. I was so glad to get home..

I think he only needs to get one more load.. I hope.. smile..
Terry thinks I would like for him to live in a bubble..grin..
Are you ladies like me when your husbands are just not the youngsters they think they still are..
Oh well..
I am thankful that he still has the health and strength to do this..
I will just be glad when this chore is done.. eh?

On another note I am also thankful for this country that we live in..
For the people who put their lives on the line every day to protect us..
I pray that God will cover them with His divine protection..

Thank you, sweet friends for dropping by the Blessed Hearth tonight..
Your comments mean so much to me and make blogging so worth the effort..

Hugs..

Luke 21:28

28 And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh.

A week of doing...

Happy Weekend everyone..

What perfectly beautiful weather we have had all week..
Beautiful fall days with warm temps and lovely breezes..
I guess we must be having our Indian Summer..
Like many other years before I think our Fall weather is better then the Summer was..

Kind of nice really because there is just so much to do..
Kind of overwhelming if I stop to think about it ..

We made a little trip to St. Martins to do some more gathering of things we forgot..
I harvested some herbs and brought home several Rosemarys  and a large lavender that is all budded..I hope it survives the transfer...
My parsley was huge for pesto and I have dried my sage...

Terry picked our second crop of beans and I made some dill ones from my friend Judy's recipe...

Then there were crab apples to do, too..
Spiced ones that is..
They turned out lovely and there was a jar of juice left which I saved for our family Christmas Dinner..
Last year everyone wanted to know what made the punch taste so different.
It is just delicious and spicy, too..

Then on another day we went again to the farm in Prosser Brook..
Terry wanted to clean out the spring some more..

We just woke up and packed our stuff and left..
No coffee or anything..
Of course, we stopped at Tim Horton's for an extra large one and Terry went by the grocers and bought a frozen pizza..
We seldom do that but we were starving and kind of had brunch, I guess..
Everything tastes good up there for some reason..

Anyway...
He went outside to work and I made a batch of Prosser Brook Relish..

My cousin, Ann gave me the recipe..
I laughed and asked her why it was called that and she said our relatives from there called it that..
So.. I had to make it..

The day before I had prepared all the veggies and salted them overnite..
Then that morning we just took it all with us..
It is lovely and made 14 pints..
I told you I love cooking in Aunt Eva's old kitchen, eh?

Terry was begging for bread, too..
I have not made it for a couple of weeks as we were
hooking up the stove and such..
This recipe HERE..
I had noticed on Pinterest that someone made their bread in a small glass crock pot and as I had one there I decided to try it..
Wonderful..
The boss says to make it in that from now on..
He thinks there is more.. grin..

I was talking to Shonda today and mentioned that I think my nerves are bad..
She wondered why..

I thought I should send her the pic of her father up that rickety ladder hanging off the flag pole that is as taller than the barn roof..

He couldn't get the old flag down as it was shredded into bits from the wind and caught there..
He comes down and carries up a full length 2x4 to poke at the top of the flagpole..
The old ladder was to one side and he was leaning back ...
Oh Lord...

Meanwhile, I am calling on the name of Jesus to protect this foolish man and he just tells me to watch and learn..

Then today he carried down a huge wood box of pickles that was at least 3 feet x 2 feet wide that he could hardly lift all the way downstairs..
Oh.. and did I mention about the fridge the other day?
Yes, I think I did..

I guess the Lord needs me to intercede on his behalf..
Do you know what I mean??..
This man is not a spring chicken..

I know he climbed poles for a living but that was many moons ago..
Well...
Shonda just laughed and said the apple didn't fall far from the tree...
What is that supposed to mean??

While I was standing with the truck keys in my hand on the step watching him (I might of had to go get help as there is no phone at the farm) I actually wondered if my kids did stuff like this that I didn't know about..

Obviously, they do as Shonda said not to ask her about the Christmas lights..
To tell you the truth I just don't want to know...

We ended up staying for supper and all I had was a few potatoes and such so I made a meal that my Gram would have served..
It was good, too, but probably not as healthy as it should have been..
What can I say?
Monday ..
Things are going to change around here..
Yeah...

Anyway, sweet ladies thanks so much for visiting and reading my crazy scribbling..
I have warned you before that this blog is nothing but tales of an old keeper of the home and the things that we are up to.. grin..

Love and appreciate you guys...
Blessings from New Brunswick..

Home time..

Hello everyone..
Hope you all had an awesome weekend..

Our first one home for many many weeks..
I must say it feels so good to be home and getting back to normal..

Terry has been busy picking our tomatoes as frost is forecast for tonight..
We have lots of cukes and green beans, too which taste so good..

I think I will try out a couple of new pickle recipes as soon as my new stove arrives..
We left our old one at the cottage and I have been trying to be creative with a slow cooker, indoor BBQ,  potato baker and micro-wave..
It has been much easier then I thought..
The only thing that is kind of complicated is making breads and desserts which we haven't needed really anyway..

Well, until today that is..
It is Terry's birthday so of course a little dessert was required if not needed.. smile..

I made a cheesecake which does not need baked...
I am sure you all make it..
The crust does not even need baked..
Then we had a slow cooker casserole made with some grilled chicken legs, rice, mushrooms, celery and onions..
All held together with condensed cream soup and broth..
One of those recipes you make out of your head if you know what I mean.. smile..
Then we went for a little drive and dropped by and visited some friends for an hour or so..
He had a good day..
The dear man..

Fall has certainly arrived here in Maritime Canada..

The corn is so high in the fields and the mornings are very cool..
The furnace has been on and felt good..
I had to bring my plants in that I leave out for the Summer while we are gone..
They have grown well..

I have so many herbs to bring home yet from the cottage but there is not frost there for a few weeks yet..
I guess the Bay keeps it warmer there or something..

We enjoyed lovely services in our home church yesterday and sweet fellowship with our church family..

So all in all we seem to be getting back in gear..
Except my house..
It takes me so long to accomplish what used to take half the time..
What can I say..
I will just putter away at it..
All in good time, I guess.. smile..

Well, sweet ladies I need to go to bed..
We are leaving early in the morning to pick up our new appliances and hopefully some garlic to plant..

You take care and thanks so much for your sweet support..
Welcome to the new followers, too..

God bless..
