A little Winter project...

Good Evening everyone...
It was a simply beautiful day here today ..

We are on the mend...
This particular flu that has hit New Brunswick is pretty potent according to the news..
We appreciate all of your thoughts and prayers..
Just thankful that we are starting to feel like doing something..

I did finish the little project that I mentioned last post..
The mystery concoction is actually homemade dish soap..
We had actually almost run out of it and so I
decided that I would try a homemade one..

There is not much required to make it..
Just a few ingredients...

I will give you the recipe just in case you might like to try it..
I must tell you that I love it...

Homemade Dish Liquid Soap..
1/2 cup of soap shavings.. I used a bar of ivory and a wee hotel bar..
4 cups of water
4 T. white vinegar
2 T. glycerin
1 tsp. salt
Place the shavings, glycerin  and water in a pot and stir with a whisk on low heat..

Do not boil..
Just heat up carefully..Then cool off a bit and add vinegar and salt..
When cool add essential oils..

I added about 5 drops of tea-tree oil and enough lavender to make it smell really good.. (these are optional)
(I love a nice smelling dish soap)

Let it sit overnight..
It did not thicken enough to suit me so I added the tsp of salt and let it sit again..
If it is not thick enough then add another tsp of salt..

It works perfectly in the dispenser bottle and looks nicer then a bottle of dish soap..

My little secret is that I whisked several squirts of Dawn lavender dish soap to the batch before I bottled it  just so that I could have some bubbles.

Making this surely saves money and you know what is in it..

Homemade laundry soap does not have bubbles and does a good job but the cover is down and you don't see it.. right?
If you don't need bubbles then just leave the few squirts of bought dish soap out..

I love the smell of lavender and the glass turns out spotless..
The vinegar must cut the grease..

This made enough for a dispenser full and a small crock..

You could use whatever scent you like for yourself..
Like sweet orange or lemon or even rosemary would be nice..
The tea-tree is antibacterial and anti fungal...

Let me know if you make it and how you like it..

Winter time here means eating potatoes more often..

This is one of our faves..
A bit of olive oil, sliced raw potatoes, salt and pepper..
Place in a hot fry pan..
Turn over...
When tender a nice handful of fresh parsley and a few squeezes of lemon juice..

What is one of your favorite winter dishes?

Thank you so much dear friends for visiting and leaving your wee notes..

I was so pleased to read the last comment that I received on my last posting.. grin..
He told me he reads the blog and I did not believe him..
I guess he does..grin..
My favorite son-in-law..
What can I say?  smile..
We love and appreciate our in law children..

God bless you all...

  2. I am not convinced about laundry soap making at home... it balanced out as expensive as buying the cheapest soaps on the market... but this I would try...

  9. I'm sorry to hear that you were ill. I'm glad that you're feeling much better.

I've never tried making my own liquid soap. I may have to try it sometime, but I think I still might miss my bubbles. :)

  10. Sorry to hear you were hit by the awful flu bug, Faye. It seems that it is pretty severe in the UK also. I'm hoping to miss it although the children are coughing and sneezing a lot.
What a fall of snow you've had but how lovely everything looks!
Irish stew is of course a winter time staple over here!
    God bless

  13. Hi Faye;

I am glad to hear that you are getting better.

I haven't used homemade dish soap - it sounds like it is worth a try to make.

Tonight for supper I am making Dal Curry which is like a thick and spicy lentil soup. My son and I love the heat and spices of South Asian foods but my husband can't take it. He is away for a supper meeting this evening which will give me the opportunity to break open the spice jars!

    See you later;

    Laurie

  16. Glad to hear you are on the mend! The flu seems to be so bad this year. I've never tried making my own dish soap, but your recipe looks interesting! Great job! I love potatoes as well. I'm cooking a lot of soup this time of year, and potato and leek soup is one of our favorites!

  17. Nice to read that you are both starting feel better.
I've been trying to avoid catching any sort of cold or flu; as I am a terrible patient!

Love the homemade dish soap. I'll have to give it a try.
I've been wanting to make a few more homemade items for the home.
I'm going to try some dusting spray soon, as well.

    Thanks for sharing.

    Continue to feel better.

p.s. My favorite Winter-time meal is probably soup... about any kind of soup, stew, chili etc... :)

  20. How sweet that your SIL reads your blog. Mine doesn't, my daughters do occasionally, though. I'm very glad that you and your hubby are feeling better, many folks around here have been sick too. We haven't been though, thank the good Lord.
Your fried potatoes look yummy, I was raised on them, at times anyways. My mom was from Oklahoma, friend potatoes were a staple with her folks.
I love a big pot of Chili in the winter time, I made some yesterday in the crockpot and my husband said it was the best I had ever made. I must remember to do it that way again, I simply threw it all in the crock pot raw, the hamburger even. I did make sure that it boiled good for quite some time so that it got hot enough.
Have a good week, my sweet friend.
    Love and hugs, Cindy

  23. I think I will try this soap...maybe it will be a bit easier on my hands than the stuff I have now... where would I but glycerin? and... do you think that soap for sensitive skin would work as shavings?

    1. Hi Lindsay.. You can get glycerin at Shoppers Drug Mart.. And I think the soap would work.. I used Ivory and it is quite mild...
      Take care, dear..
